Trees are an important part of
any construction site. Some site developers call for
trees to be removed beyond the footprints of the buildings,
while others work to save healthy trees as a means to
improve the quality and aesthetics of the completed site.
In order to save trees, many steps must be taken to ensure
their survival well beyond the completion of the project.
Several websites provide
information and steps on how to properly protect trees
during construction.

Some developments in the U.S.
are going beyond merely saving trees. They are using
sustainable, sound urban planning to integrate the existing
environment into the development site. This
development practice is called Green Infrastructure.
It includes development, but at the same time, it supports
an interconnected network of natural areas, working lands
and open/green space. Additionally, this practice
seeks to use sustainable practices such as greenroofs,
rainwater harvesting, natural habitats to control stormwater
runoff, and many other creative ways to lessen the impact to
the local enviroment. This represents a new
conservation approach that allows land planners and
conservation professionals to forge a stronger link between
land use and land preservation. Using this concept,
developers take a more holistic approach to their site.
Land planners and site developers who strive to save trees,
the accompanying vegetation, and maintain connectivity of
habitat are to be commended; for they create more
sustainable, enjoyable and healthy cities for humans,
wildlife and nature.
