Fort Worth’s Heritage Trees the Subject of April Tree Tour

By Wes Culwell

The CTUFC Spring Tree Tour of Fort Worth Heritage Trees was held on Saturday, April 27. Our most historic trees were located in the Cultural District featuring the John Peter Smith and Van Zandt Live Oaks. John Peter Smith was the Fort Worth mayor for six terms and argued for a public water supply. He did many things for Fort Worth and was unfortunately murdered in Kansas City on a Ft. Worth promotion trip. The Van Zandt Cottage is the oldest of its type in Ft. Worth. Mr. Van Zandt owned the area of Trinity Park, the Botanic Gardens and most of the Cultural District.

Our plan to visit the National Champion Mesquite and the World’s Fair Red Oak was cancelled due to a concert being held on the grass in front of the Will Rogers Complex. We visited a few trees that were very important to some local neighborhoods like TCU, Monticello and Crestwood which were developed in the early 1900’s. Holidays, Easter Egg hunts, meetings and much more were held by these trees.

The Royal Flying Corps Live Oak watches over the graves of thirteen soldiers of the Royal British and Canadian Air Forces. Along with the US Army Signal Corps, airmen trained here from October 1917 to November 1918 to learn to fly biplanes at the dawn of aviation. There were three airfields located in Tarrant County. 101 men died during that year. This started the Memorial Day celebration in Ft. Worth.

Scenic views at Inspiration and Mosque Points on Lake Worth

Most of the afternoon was spent near Lake Worth. The Inspiration Point and Mosque Point Live Oaks are located on the rim of the Trinity River Basin there. These trees provide panoramic views of the lake, great sunsets, the airbase and Lockheed. The large Casino Beach Pecan, with its large lightning scar, sits on the location of a once national attraction with the infamous Ballroom and year-round carnival. Our last tree was the George T. Reynolds Live Oak at the I820 boat ramp and is the largest live oak on the lake. Mr. Reynolds was a cattle baron and an Indian fighter. He carried an arrowhead in the muscles near his spine for 15 years before removal. He sold his property to Amon G. Carter.

SPRING 2019 TREE TOUR

SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2019

8:30AM – 2:45PM

The theme for the spring tour is Fort Worth Heritage Trees.  There have been about 70 designations since the program’s inception in 2009.  We will take a look at about 15 of the biggest and best of this special tree group.  This wonderful day will include two of Fort Worth’s National Champions and several trees designated for some of the cities’ forefathers and their great stories and contributions.  Some of these great trees had neighborhoods planned and built around them and meetings and celebrations have been held by them for 80-100 years.  We even have trees that will provide us with incredible views.

Fort Worth is truly blessed with a rich history and heritage and a wonderful group of trees that were witness’s to the beginnings and the development of the city.  Many Texas cities have the same environment as Fort Worth.  The difference is that the Fort Worth Parks Department and City Forester Melinda Adams had the vision, desire and ability to start and maintain this incredible program.  There is no place in Texas that does more than Fort Worth does in historic tree recognition.

So, set the date and take a ride with us to take a look at these great trees and their stories.  We will provide you with more detailed information and the opportunity to register very soon.

GENERAL TOUR SUMMARY: Climb aboard for a historic tree tour with a ‘Western Flare’.  We will travel west of Fort Worth where “The West Begins” to see some big trees like the National Champion Pecan which predates the birth of our nation and probably twice as old.  We will travel through ten counties and five county seats.  Most of the tour will follow our beautiful state highways.  Parker County is considered to be the ‘Cutting Horse Capital of the World’ and we’ll pass by some world class horse and cattle ranches.  Palo Pinto County, pictured above, is one of the most scenic counties in North Central Texas.   These two counties were the birthplace of the Goodnight-Loving Trail.  The lives of Oliver Loving and Charles Goodnight and the trail they blazed was the basis for the book and movie “Lonesome Dove” and it all happened here and not down in South Texas.  So, we’ll explore the ‘true story’, the characters and the incredibly wonderful Pecan tree these men sat below and forged their agreement in 1866.  If you’re a ‘Lonesome Dove’ fan, this tour is a must!

We will explore the history of eight Famous Trees of Texas, viewing most of them, and take a vertical look at the former State Champion Bur Oak, also much older than our Nation. It’s a GOOD RIDE!
