Interested in planting a tree? A few questions you should answer beforehand are: Is this a good location for the tree I want? Are soils, space, and utility easements a potential problem? What kind of tree do I need, and what do I want it to provide me? Go to the Native Plants page to learn about trees native to the Cross Timbers region. You can check for water, gas, and electrical lines by calling 811 prior to planting your tree.
Next, ask where am I going to get the tree? Is the nursery reputable, or does it employ an arborist? Are there free trees available from your city? Sign up for our newsletter to keep up to date on events such as tree giveaways, or reach out to your city’s arborist or forester.
Finally, do you have the tools and ability to plant the tree? Can you water the tree for the first 1-3 years? Planting small “liner” trees or bareroot seedlings is something most homeowners can do themselves, and the trees will more rapidly develop a full root system. Not all trees survive transplanting, but chances are your tree will do fine with basic watering and protection. If you do lose your tree, don’t be afraid to try again!
